Gathering Liturgy | September 27

Call to Worship

Praise the Eternal! It is good to sing praises to our God, for praise is beautiful and pleasant. The Eternal, Architect of earth, is building Jerusalem, finding the lost, gathering Israel’s outcasts. He binds their wounds, heals the sorrows of their hearts. He counts all the stars within His hands, carefully fixing their number and giving them names. Our Lord is great. Nothing is impossible with His overwhelming power. He is loving, compassionate, and wise beyond all measure. Open your mouths with thanks! Sing praises to the Eternal! But the Eternal does take pleasure in those who worship Him, those who invest hope in His unfailing love. (From Psalm 147 | The Voice)

Song | The Lion and The Lamb

Prayer of Confession

Look on me with a heart of mercy, O God, according to Your generous love. According to Your great compassion, wipe out every consequence of my shameful crimes. Thoroughly wash me, inside and out, of all my crooked deeds. Cleanse me from my sins. For I am fully aware of all I have done wrong, and my guilt is there, staring me in the face. It was against You, only You, that I sinned, for I have done what You say is wrong, right before Your eyes. So when You speak, You are in the right. When You judge, Your judgments are pure and true. (From Psalm 51)

Song | I Surrender All

Prayer of Assurance

If you find any comfort from being in the Anointed, if His love brings you some encouragement, if you experience true companionship with the Spirit, if His tenderness and mercy fill your heart; then, brothers and sisters, here is one thing that would complete my joy—come together as one in mind and spirit and purpose, sharing in the same love. Don’t let selfishness and prideful agendas take over. Embrace true humility, and lift your heads to extend love to others. Get beyond yourselves and protecting your own interests; be sincere, and secure your neighbors’ interests first. (From Philippians 2)

Song | I Give Myself Away

Scripture Reading | 1 Corinthians 10:31

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Sermon Notes | The Gospel and Work

The (Gospel) enables us to work for the glory of God.

  • 1 Corinthians 8:1, 4, 7

Everything you do in your life (matters).

Our actions will either (magnify) or (cloud) the glory of God.

  • Hebrews 13:8

God's glory is defined as "his (visible) and (active presence) in creation."

God does all things for his (glory).

  • Psalm 19:1; Romans 1:20-23; Genesis 12:2-3. Deuteronomy 7:7

While God is (selfless), we are often times (selfish).

  • Isaiah 43:6-7; Isaiah 49:6; John 1:3-5, 14, 18; Ezekiel 36:26-27

The way you (live) correlates with the glory of God (displayed) from our lives.

“Everywhere Jesus looked he saw the hidden spiritual world opening itself up to view through the ordinary, the mundane, the everyday…the kingdom can be seen everywhere.” - Chris Webb

How do we glorify God in work?

  1. We are (grateful) to God for our job.

  2. We work by (loving) Christ and (loving) others.

  3. We work, knowing we are part of a (great story).

  • Habakkuk 2:14; Matthew 13:31-32

To prepare for next week: Our Problem with Work; Genesis 11:1-9

Communion

For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. (1 Corinthians 11.23-26) Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

(For the bread) “This is the body of Christ, broken for you.”

(For the juice) “This is the blood of Christ, shed for you.”

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

Song | 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)

Benediction

Bless the Lord, O my soul, And all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits; Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases; Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion; Who satisfies your years with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle. (Psalm 103:1-5)

Peace be with you. And also with you!
